چکیده

We prove that, under certain conditions, the capacity of an optical communication channel with in-line, nonlinear filtering (regeneration) elements can be higher than the Shannon capacity for the corresponding linear Gaussian white noise channel.

Shannon capacity of nonlinear regenerative channels

We compute Shannon capacity of nonlinear channels with regenerative elements. Conditions are found under which capacity of such nonlinear channels is higher than the Shannon capacity of the classical linear additive white Gaussian noise channel. We develop a general scheme for designing the proposed channels and apply it to the particular nonlinear sine-mapping. The upper bound for regeneration...

Regeneration limit of classical Shannon capacity.

Since Shannon derived the seminal formula for the capacity of the additive linear white Gaussian noise channel, it has commonly been interpreted as the ultimate limit of error-free information transmission rate. However, the capacity above the corresponding linear channel limit can be achieved when noise is suppressed using nonlinear elements; that is, the regenerative function not available in...

Linear Universal Decoder for Compound Discrete Memoryless Channels

Shannon in his seminal work [1] formalized the framework on the problem of digital communication of information and storage. He quantified the fundamental limits of compression and transmission rates. The quantity channel capacity was coined to give an operational meaning on the ultimate limit of information transfer between two entities, transmitter and receiver. By using a random coding argum...

Extending the Shannon Upper Bound Using Spiral Modulation

The Shannon upper bound places a limit on the error-free information transmission rate (capacity) of a noisy channel. It has stood for over sixty years, and underlies both theoretical and practical work in the telecommunications industry. This upper bound arises from the Shannon-Hartley law, which has two parameters: the available bandwidth and the signal-to-noise power ratio. However, aside fr...

Capacity estimates for optical transmission based on the nonlinear Fourier transform

What is the maximum rate at which information can be transmitted error-free in fibre-optic communication systems? For linear channels, this was established in classic works of Nyquist and Shannon. However, despite the immense practical importance of fibre-optic communications providing for >99% of global data traffic, the channel capacity of optical links remains unknown due to the complexity i...
